George Washington House Guide
Walk in the Footsteps of a Founding Father Guide
Step back in time and explore George Washington House, the only house outside the United States where the future first president of the United States resided. Located in Rockley, Barbados, this beautifully preserved plantation house offers a fascinating glimpse into Washington's early life and the island's colonial past. It's a must-see for history buffs and anyone interested in learning more about the connection between Barbados and the United States. George Washington, then a 19-year-old, spent two months in Barbados in 1751 with his ailing half-brother, Lawrence. Lawrence hoped the warm climate would improve his tuberculosis. During their stay, George contracted smallpox, which left him immune to the disease later in life. The house provides insight into the social and political climate of Barbados during the 18th century, a time of significant colonial influence and the burgeoning sugar industry. Visitors can take a guided tour of the house, exploring the various rooms and learning about Washington's time on the island. The site also features interactive exhibits, including a virtual tour of Bridgetown in the 1750s and a film about Washington's life. The Garrison Historic Area, where the house is located, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering further opportunities for historical exploration. The on-site cafe offers refreshments and light meals.
